Why SNHLocal Exists

Strong Communities = Strong Commerce

Community Doesn't Just Happen

I've learned that the hard way.

I'm a single father with kids who have complex needs. Emergency lights have flashed outside my house more times than I can count over the past five years. Sirens. Ambulances. Police. You couldn't miss it. Not a single neighbor has ever checked to ask if we're okay.

But when a boy on my street with Down syndrome got locked out, and no one was home, I brought him inside my home, gave him food, and let him watch his favorite show until his parents arrived. I didn't think about it. That's just what you do.

Except many people don't. And systems built to help in New Hampshire? Most don't help much either.

When Things Broke

When COVID hit, I suddenly found myself a single father of three, trying to keep my small digital agency running while managing everything on my own.

I asked for help. Here's what I got:

  • Letters to politicians that went unanswered
  • One representative told me that helping would be "inappropriate."
  • Agencies that canceled each other out—one provides support, another then disqualifies you - you end up nowhere.
  • Multiple professionals, including doctors and DHHS workers, told me, "Move to Massachusetts if you want help."
  • Government EIDL Covid loans, pitched as lifelines, have turned into nooses strangling small local businesses.

The safety net in New Hampshire has too many holes to catch residents in need, and struggling people can't contribute to the local economy.

While struggling, I noticed something else: the best local businesses were impossible to find. A master electrician with 30 years' experience—phone stays silent, now working at Home Depot. A family restaurant that sponsored Little League for years, invisible online while chains dominate search results. These aren't just businesses. They're families in our community—and they were disappearing.

What I Built Instead

I finally stopped waiting for help. I built something.

SNHLocal is a free directory of trustworthy local businesses and helpful community services in Southern New Hampshire. No ads, no algorithms, no catch.

Why free? Because the businesses and services that matter most often can't afford marketing or don't know that a pretty website alone doesn't get new customers. Visibility shouldn't require a big budget.

Why both businesses AND community services? Because they're connected. The business that thrives can donate to the food pantry. The family that gets help from the food pantry becomes someone's customer. It's all one circle.

Why me? Because when I was drowning, I couldn't find the help that existed. If someone else is struggling—whether it's a business owner trying to get found or a family trying to find resources—maybe this makes it easier. Helping neighbors. It's what you do.

Strong Communities = Strong Commerce.
