How SNHLocal Works

SNHLocal is a curated guide of the best local businesses in Southern New Hampshire — for the people who live here, and the business owners who serve them. Here's how each side works, and how the two sides support each other.

From the Founder

"I built SNHLocal because the businesses that make Southern New Hampshire worth living in deserve to be found — and the people who live here deserve a guide they can trust. Not an algorithm. Not pay-to-play. Just a real person doing the work of curation, the way the best local guides have always been built."

— Mark B. Marquis · Founder, SNHLocal · Air Force veteran · 25 years in digital marketing · Windham, NH

SNHLocal serves two audiences. Local Guides are Southern NH residents who use the guide to find local businesses and refer the ones they love. Local Stars are the verified businesses they find. Each side makes the other side stronger — and both sides are always free.

If You Own a Southern NH Business

SNHLocal isn't a directory you pay to be listed on. It's a curated guide where businesses are selected through an editorial process. If you meet the standards, your Local Star listing is free — and it becomes a structured local-SEO asset that ties into your Google Business Profile.

  1. 1

Apply or get referred by a Local Guide

Submit the apply form directly, or get nominated by a Southern NH resident who knows your business. Both paths go through the same review.

  2. 2

Mark audits your business against the four-point standard

Locally owned · positive Google reviews · serves Southern NH · supports the community. Decisions usually within two business days.

  3. 3

    Receive the verification form

If you qualify, you'll get a private, more detailed form to gather the information needed for your full editorial profile.

  4. 4

A short conversation to confirm details

Phone or email. Quick. The point is making sure the profile reflects your actual business — not what an algorithm thinks.

  5. 5

Your Local Star profile goes live

Full editorial write-up, Local Star badge, NAP data mirroring your GBP exactly, integrated into SNHLocal search and town pages. Always free.

The Editorial Process — What "Verified" Actually Means

SNHLocal verification isn't automated. Every Local Star is reviewed by Mark personally. Here's what that involves and what we look at.

The Initial Audit

Before we send the detailed verification form, Mark reviews your business externally: your Google Business Profile, your reviews and review patterns, your website if you have one, public records on ownership, and whether your business demonstrably serves Southern NH. The goal is filtering before we ask you for time — most "no" decisions happen here, without the business owner being involved.

The Verification Form

If you pass the initial audit, you get a private form gathering the information needed for an editorial profile — your business story, services offered, what makes you different, photos, owner background. This is the kind of detail that turns a basic listing into an editorial profile. It takes about fifteen minutes to fill out, and you do it once.

The Conversation

A brief phone or email conversation to confirm details, catch anything the form missed, and make sure the profile feels right. Mark talks to the actual owner whenever possible — the people running these businesses have stories worth hearing, and those stories are what make a Local Star listing more than just data.

Ongoing Review

Verified status isn't permanent. Listings are re-checked annually as a baseline, plus on triggering events — customer complaints, ownership changes, license issues. Businesses can lose verified status if standards stop being met. The verification badge means something because we're willing to enforce it.

For Business Owners — The Real Value

Why a Local Star Listing Works Harder Than a Typical Directory Listing

Most local directories are scraped data anyone can edit. SNHLocal is editorially curated, human-verified, and structured for local-SEO performance. That makes a meaningful difference in three places where your customers actually find you.

Your Google Business Profile

Citations — listings of your business name, address, and phone across the web — are one of the four pillars of local SEO. Google's algorithm uses citation consistency to verify a business is legitimate. When your SNHLocal listing matches your GBP data exactly (NAP, hours, service area), and that listing comes from an editorially curated, human-verified source, it acts as a high-quality citation that strengthens your GBP's authority. Most local businesses don't have their citation pillar right. SNHLocal fixes that for you, for free.

Traditional Organic Search

Google's traditional ten-blue-links results increasingly surface curated, editorial sources for local queries — especially queries like "best plumber in Derry" or "where to eat in Portsmouth." A SNHLocal Local Star profile is structured with proper local-business schema, optimized meta data, and an editorial write-up that gives Google content to surface. You'll often see SNHLocal listings ranking for the kind of local searches that used to be Yelp's territory.

AI Search (Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity)

Local search is no longer just blue links. When someone asks ChatGPT for the best dentist in Salem NH, or asks Google AI Overviews for a Manchester landscaper, the AI is pulling from curated sources — exactly the kind of content SNHLocal produces. Being a Local Star helps you show up not just in traditional Google results, but in the AI-generated answers that are quickly becoming the new front door for local discovery.

Citations are one pillar of local SEO. The other three — your GBP optimization, your reviews, and your on-site SEO — are work the business owner does (or hires done). SNHLocal handles the citation pillar for you, free, as a Local Star. If you want help with the other three, Mark's agency Mark B. Marquis & Co works with Southern NH businesses on the full local-SEO stack.

The Four-Point Standard, Briefly

SNHLocal lists businesses that meet all four:

  • Locally owned — We follow the ownership, not just the address. National chains with local storefronts don't qualify.
  • Positive Google reviews — Not just stars, but substance. Consistent positive feedback and honest responses to criticism.
  • Serves Southern New Hampshire — Storefront or service area, Rockingham · Hillsborough · Merrimack · Strafford counties.
  • Supports the community — Local hiring, local sourcing, sponsorship, or just running a business that adds something real to the neighborhood.
